Welcome to Future Trees Trust
The only UK charity dedicated to improving broadleaved trees.
Using research to secure a future for broadleaved trees to produce better quality and faster-growing hardwood timber.
We have tree research trial sites across the UK where we test material from carefully selected superior parent trees of seven broadleaved species. Our researchers monitor their development over many years.
Anyone planting trees, where timber is the primary objective, ought to be using the highest standard of planting stock available. See the availability of improved planting stock.
Tree breeding is long term, expensive work and we partner with many organisations to achieve our goals. Our core work is with seven important timber species, but we also work on other projects to address tree health, forest adaptation and resilience
We have some bold plans for the next five years. By 2025, we will:
Plant progeny trials for silver birch and sycamore
Establish six oak grafted seed orchards
Continue work on the Living Ash Project to find ash trees resilient to ash dieback
Identify 50 more birch and oak plus trees
Collect grafting material from all newly identified plus trees
Establish four demonstration plots across the UK to showcase our achievements
