Craven Field Research Woodland

Securing the Future of Native Broadleaf Trees

Craven Field is a 21-hectare research woodland in Uffington, Oxfordshire, established by Future Trees Trust to secure the future of native broadleaf trees through pioneering trials, seed orchards, and public engagement.

🌱 What We’ve Achieved So Far

  • Planting Underway: Oak, Birch, Beech, Sycamore, and Hornbeam trials are already in progress, with biodiversity planting enhancing ecological value.

  • Infrastructure Installed: Deer fencing, gates, rabbit netting, and access improvements have been completed to protect and maintain the site.

  • Equipment Procured: A bowser, drone, mower, quad bike, and truck support site management and research.

  • Community Engagement: Over 3,200 students aged 4–18 have visited in the past year, with capacity growing to 10,000 annually.

Why Craven Field Matters

  • Genetic Diversity: Trials are designed to produce Qualified Forest Reproductive Material for species like Oak, Hornbeam, Sycamore, Birch, Beech, and Ash.

  • Climate Resilience: Selective thinning and monitoring will identify superior traits to combat pests, disease, and climate change.

  • Education & Outreach: Curriculum-linked visits, careers days, and interpretation boards connect young people and communities to the science of forestry.

  • National Impact: Supports UK targets for timber security, biodiversity, and carbon capture.
