Foresters

After more than 30 years of dedicated research by the Future Trees Trust, we are proud to offer Qualified planting stock for silver birch, sycamore, and wild cherry. In addition, we are in the process of establishing seed orchards that will soon produce Qualified downy birch, pedunculate oak, sessile oak, and sweet chestnut.

It is crucial for foresters looking to plant trees with timber as the primary objective to utilise the highest standard of planting stock. Trees that exhibit vigorous growth, resulting in straight stems with minimal branching, are more likely to yield a profitable crop of high-quality timber. This vigorous early growth not only ensures quicker establishment but also reduces weeding and cleaning costs, providing an economic advantage over trees of inferior provenance or quality. By investing in superior planting stock, foresters can ensure long-term success and quality timber for their client properties.

Visit our Improved Planting Stock page for more info.

The research team at Future Trees Trust, along with two members of our Research Advisory Group, have written a guidance document on where we deem it suitable to establish plants arising from our seed orchards. In accompaniment we have produced data sheets for each of these orchards which provide details about composition and a map on where material arising is suitable for planting. We hope that together these will help inform practitioners on what planting stock is available and where it can be planted to achieve all the benefits of tree improvement.

Guidance on seed use

Our research takes many years and we are the only UK charity dedicated to this kind of work, therefore we need the help of foresters and the forestry industry.
